Technology Awareness Group, August 16th, 2007
University Hall Room 5011
Montclair State University
Moderator: Brian Hancock
Agenda
1. Ron Jantz, Rutgers University
Title: Trusted Digital Objects and Scholarly Communication.
Abstract: This talk will attempt to shed some light on concepts related to
trusted digital objects including authenticity, reliability, integrity,
and credibility. The objective will be to distinguish what might be done
to increase trustworthiness of digital objects, both in the human domain
and the code/infrastructure domain. The talk will highlight more questions
than answers but should suggest some possible directions.
2. Terry Catapano, Columbia University
Title: METS (Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard).
Abstract: XML Markup can be described as assertions which license inferences
about data (BECHAMEL Project;
http://eprg.isrl.uiuc.edu/projects.html). However, the mechanisms
available for such statements about data can be ambiguous and weak,
as well as misused and misunderstood, creating difficulties for
interoperablity. I will discuss the problem of markup semantics in
the METS schema and what approaches have been and can be taken to
make clearer statements about data to improve interoperabilty.
3. Jeffery Triggs, Rutgers University
Title: Using the New Java Applet Viewer for DjVu.
Abstract: I will talk about large scale implementation of the new Java applet viewer for DjVu files. I will use several of my non-Rutgers sites as examples, and will demonstrate a simple PHP wrapper that I use to mimic djvuopts by setting the applet's parameters in various situations on the fly.
4. Mike Giarlo, Princeton University
Title: Ruby on Rails: Zen and the Art of Web Application Building.
Abstract: The Ruby programming language was designed to make programming more joyful. The Rails web framework builds upon the Ruby philosophy to aid developers with productivity and application maintainability. Do they succeed? Come see what this enthusiastic neophyte has to say about Ruby on Rails and learn about structured, agile development and building service-oriented web applications.
